First attempt of our video

Analysis of Digipak

Front Cover:
With the front cover our original idea was to use a different photo however for our final image we used a black and white effeect and photoshopped the lips red. We did this to continue a theme of dark colours and red, in order to stand out. The image we used is quite simple compared to the previous image we were going to use. From our feedback we recieved criticism about the background and therefore took a new picture with a simple background. From looking at many of the pop artists we recognized that a lot of the images were close up shots, where you could see the emotion in their face, we then tried to capture this and believe we did so successfully. The writing took a while to put together as we wanted to make it seem as if it was a signed copy, we added the more personal touch of a Kiss and scribble writing (which we found on the internet) this was then, added and put in red in order to stand out. I think that 'Addictive' could have been a bit more in bold as it does not match the artist name.

Leaflet Insert and Poster:
We wanted to include 2 things for the insert, one would represent the hit single We Found Love and therefore used an image that was in our video, the image is of her picking a daisy symbolising 'Love me Love me not' the writing on the picture make it seem like a magazine cut out, it is a poster that could be put on the wall, we adjusted the lighting to make it seem a bit darker to symbolize the dark times within the track. I really like the sad face that she is sitting next to as it symbolizes her feelings as she picks the daisy. We were very lucky to find that!

With the leaflet insert we wanted to achieve a simple handout that folded up to assume that Jayme-Lee is kissing herself (If this was folded) we did this to make it seem like a book that is being opened to show her life, the images used were very bright and happy, they showed her true self and were similar to a photo found in a wallet which is what we wanted to get across like. A more personal touch

Competition and Envelope
We wanted to add something a bit mroe rather than just a poster and so designed a competition leaflet that kepts within the colour scheme, we wanted to add a more personal touch and therefore wrote 'Lots of Love' symbolizing a personal card.

Website Analysis

This is the website homepage, we wanted to maintain the black white and red colour format in order to link with the video and digipak, We added a header at the top in order to advertise the new album of our artist, this is quoted 'Addictive'. We also included an advertisment which gives links on where you can buy this album. We found these examples on all the websites that we analysed e.g. Rihanna's and justin Biebers. The background is just plain as we wanted the image to stand out, the image we used was quite simple, the image of Jayme-Lee laying down is very simplistic compared to her 'edgy' side shown when she is smoking the cigarette. The visitors to the website can access the video and like it, which gives us mroe interaction and spreads the popularity, in the hope that it will go viral. We wanted the images to be as eye catching as possible and so used a dark and basic background to stand out with the contrast of the pictures.

These are the tour dates of Jayme - Lee's tour, we included this to improve the popularity and hopefully spread the word of the album. Any artist wants their tour dates to sell out and by advertising this on the website we are increasing potential sales. The tours sponsor is Nike, we decided to use a large well established name as everybody will recognize this. The company is managed by AEG live, we originally got this from Beyonces website and decided to follow this convention, since we did not know any production companies we used this. We trademarked our website as we found this was common in a lot of websites, doing so also gives the wesbite a professional look.

This is the biography page of our website, we decided to include such a page as this was found common in many music websites. Adding a biography page also adds a personal touch about the artist and makes it their own rather than simply just promoting their products. The biography page is also there for the fans, it gives the audience the chance to have an insight into their lives and find out more. We added sponsors all over the page as we recognized this on Pixie Lotts website, she had a number of sponsors and thought that this promotes good business and leaves the artist with good publicity, this is important to give the right image. We again added her sponsors such as Nike, Loreal and Mcdonalds aswell as her Record label, and producers. We did so because other pop websites included this information. We ensured that our artist sponsored a number of charities as a lot of famous people do so, recent publicity has lead to a lot of people sponsoring such charities and so therefore we decided to get Jayme-Lee to sponsor KONY 2012 and War Child.

Together we decided to have a store page on our website so that fans can access different retailers of her album, this is done on Justin Biebers website where he has links to iTunes and HMV. This will give people the oppurtunity to buy the single seperately form the album, which may appeal to them. iTunes sponsor our album and therefore get discount when purchased through iTunes, this encourages people to buy as they would not be paying full price as they normally would. We included quotes from the artist at the bottom of the page to make it more personal, this also gives the viewers the chance to access the outlet to buy the album

Throughout the website we have encouraged the use of the black white and red themes, we have included similar pages to that of actual websites and this is what makes it successful. In terms of pages there is not much difference between each artist, however it is the images that are used that distinguish one from the other.

Initial Branding

Our first idea for our artist name was something that was edgy and different, we didnt want to choose a name that was boring and usual. You never see a pop star with a name like 'Emily' it is always something catchy like 'Pixie Lott' 'Emile Sande'. After looking at a lot of different artists that had their second and last name we decided to use a double barelled name to make it even more unique. We then decided on the name Jamie - Lee however thought the spelling could be changed to image a popstar even further. This is when we came up with Jayme-Lee.

We decided on the album name addictive as we highlight substance abuse throughout, we also dived into the idea of a love and hate relationship, you can be addicted to somebody and this links with the substance abuse.

We kept our track name the same to stick with the conventions of the pop genre, we didnt want to move away from Rihanna as it would be difficult to brand our album and video.

Web 2.0

here is me using an online presentation software that enables me to create brainstorms and do research online. Here I researched about web 2.0 and Michael Wesch, funnily enough i used the interaction of web 2.0 to create this and me blogging now is all down to web 2.0!

Pre production Questionnaire

This is the questionnaire that I initially created before producing our video we found out that

80% of people asked were aged 18-24 and a further 20% were aged 25-34, this gives us the idea to push jayme-lee's image away from one that is appealing to those under 18's. We could consider re branding her image to use the female and male gaze.

50% of people said that they prefered pop music, 30% indie and 20% rock. So therefore by looking at this we are certain that creating a pop music video was the best decision.

This was one of the most interesting questions to use, a lot of people said that bright colours, flashing lights and appealing people all make a music video appealing. It is important to remember your target audience and include things that people want.

100% of people said that colours were important and they also said that it is important to get the right colours, to use colours that stand out rather than ones that dissolve into the background.

nearly 80% of people asked said that Love was the most popular topic of a pop music video, considering the likes of justin bieber and rihanna. 20 % also said that fun and partying was the next best narrative for a pop music video.

Rihanna Interview

Get More: Music News

here is rihanna speaking on the reasons behind the we found love video, her interview claimed
"One of the big things for me, I always want to help young women and give them insight into life experiences," she explained. "One of those things is going through an abusive relationship like I did. But that's one thing for me. So I don't want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn't define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I'll do that."

Rihanna claimed that she wanted to help young women, by giving them an insight into life experiences, she compares this to her abusive relationship with chris brown.

Conventions of a Pop genre

I will be focusing on katy perrys music video "The One That Got Away" to highlight the conventions of a pop video. It is important to analyse a key pop artist to ensure that you are not deviating away from the actual genre. Certain conventions are characteristic with different genres, so it was imperative that i picked a definite pop song.
Throughout this pop video it includes very lovey scenes, with a lot of actions associated with love. Such as a man and a woman kissing, laughing and cuddling all these scenes relate to the idea of love and affection which are common throughout pop videos.

Another convention often used in pop videos are abstract clothes and makeup, many artists want to stand out and have that 'edgy' look so therefore may dress provocatively or just plain weird. This gives them the edge which gives them the look of an 'artist' and deviates their image from being shown to the younger generation.

Before we began the actual filming of our video I needed to create an initial storyboard, by creating this it allows us to prepare for the shots in hand, helps us to understand the shots that need to be carried out including lighting, props, special effects etc.

The first shot we thought of was of the protagonist waking up on a park bench after a night out, The shot is 3 seconds long and is of a long shot showing the mis en scene which is the park, and the outdoors. This is significant as it shows that she is distressed confused and lonely as she wakes up, it is representing her going 'off the rails' and although it does not completely begin the narrative it will be made clear when we begin to see the fighting scenes later on in the video

This scene is of Jayme-Lee waking up, looking around in a confusion and a daze, we wanted to show that she didnt remember the night before and show that she is a party animal.

This is a shot of her walking towards the camera, with her shoes in her hand and her makeup smudged, clearly doing the 'walk of shame' as many of us have done before. The shot is a long body shot to capture the mis en scene and show that she is walking towards the camera and not away

This shot is a close up of Jayme-Lee crying to show her feelings and to show that she is upset, This is a shot lasting 5 seconds but its slowed down to really get the meaning of the shot

The car shot, shows the hapiness with her boyfriend and shows that she's in love. this lasts for around 5 seconds

First Draft of Digipak

I sat down and decided on ideas that could potentially be used for the design of our music video, As the digipak was being sectioned into two we all wanted different ideas for our design of the digipak. i created a series of ideas that could be used for the deisgn, pictures, inserts and feel of it. These are the ideas that I came up with for the themes of our digipak.

Initial ideas of digipak
The ideas that I came up with were initial ideas that I was going to expand on. We first came up with the idea of creating a CD cover, we thought that this would be a good idea as a cd is never blank. A lot of people in our media class were also doing CD covers and therefore we deicided against doing this and instead we wanted to try something different. Our next idea for the inside of the digipak was an insert, we thought that we could include a poster and a pull out of pictures. We thought this would be a good idea as these are personal images that can only befound within the digipak, the fan who bought the CD could then keep these pictures on them or put them somewhere, this way they can have full use of the pictures rather than them being on top of the CD,where it wouldnt be seen inside the cd player. At first we was very unsure of the colour scheme and thought we could perhaps go for pink or vibrant colours to make the album stand out from the others. We then thought that we do not just want our album to appeal to women, we would also like it to appeal to men aswell. After looking at the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga we realized that a lot of female pop artists have a 'sexy' look and highlight their assets by wearing nothing, well nearly nothing. This look makes the album sell, Rihanna is now known for her 'freaky'ways and her sexual image, making her appeal to both men and women. "Men want her and Women want to be her". After realizing that this is the best way to sell an album we rethough about the colours, rather than going for vibrant colours or pink we made a final decision on a Black, White and Red colour scheme to represent a woman, and a new sexy feel to Jayme-Lee.

Final Design and Analysis of Front, Back and Inserts of Digipak

Website Analysis

In order to get the perfect website it is important that I analyse a certain number of established 'POP' artist's websites. I have descided to choose

-Justin Bieber
- Rihanna

Here you can see that the colour scheme of Justin Bieber is a classic black white and yellow, the black andwhite contrast against eachother and the red stands out, this could be something that we could use in the design of our website. Having something that stands out and feels like a pop website ensures that people will access this page, whether it be to link with the latest single, to access live feed or get to know the actual pop artist. Having a classic theme with a splash of colour ensures that your webpage stands out from the others.

The images used on this website clearly tell us that it is about Justin Bieber, they have close ups, medium shots and large shots that take over the page, this I believe is because the creators of this website understand that Justin Bieber sells to girls, young girls that have a 'crush' on him. So therefore by putting large images over the website, it is using his selling point to make the website popular. The only thing that I would PERSONALLY comment on would be the consistent pose throughout all the images, this could have been changed to make it slightly mroe interesting..
On the website you can access behind the scenes footage on the creation of their music video.

The typography on this website is detailed and holds links to different selling stores of his album, it enables you to download directly from iTunes, you can access videos, it has a countdown to the release of his album. The detailed wording makes the website look professional and sells his album more than the pictures, it is a good idea to use a lot of links about tour dates and information to ensure the album will sell and this is something that I will contribute in the making of the website.

Justin Biebers target audience is young girls, and therefore by plastering pictures of their 'dream' boyfriend they are then selling the product, a lot of girls will access the website, see the pictures and instantly want to look further. Which then creates a lot of potential buyers for his album.

RIHANNA

Rihannas website seems a lot more mordern, and seems to have been done to a much higher standard.

The colour scheme of rihannas seems to be a grey and white with different colours splashed on different pages. She is always the one in colour or is always the picture that stands out, by having such a changing website it shocks people into looking further into her website. This could mean that these people could potentially buy her album.

The images of the website are very revealing and very sexual, Rihanna knows that sex sells and by posting pictures of her half naked she is taking advantage of the male gaze. She looks like she has the type of attitude where 'Every man wants her and Every woman wants to BE her' this is the look that the website is going for. By having this look she is ensuring that she has a target audience of both men and women. All the images are enlarged to highlight her assets and to increase the visual experience.

The typography of the website is very little, very basic links are used e.g. arrows 'Live' 'Shop' 'Press' 'Me' 'See', I believe that she has used less typography as she has used a lot more photography, and by using basic simple words she is not confusing her audience.

From looking at this website it is clear that rihanna and Justin Bieber understand what their selling point is and the website highlights this, for example Justin Bieber knows that young girls adore him so therefore posts 'cute' pictures where he is looking into the camera, potentially dazzling his fans that access his website. Rihanna on the other hand knows that her body and her 'look' sells and therefore accentuates this by adding revealing pictures and very little words. Overall I think that Rihannas website is most successful as the shock of the website is what makes is memorable.

Evaluation of Showcase

Evaluation of Showcase
On the 19th April Me Charlotte and Marianna attended a group session that involved year 12 and 13 media students, as a class we put together a group of questions which were asked to the audience (including friends and family). We then evaluated the answers and put together a table that listed the asnwers, overall we recieved some really good feedback

1)Did you think the choice of settings in the video were appropiate?
On this queston we recieved different feedback, one audience member stated 'Sort of need more repetition' however another person stated that it was 'too' repetitive. Its difficult to analyse when you have comments that contradict eachother. Other people said 'yes', 'yes it worked good', 'yes because they are varied'. Overall a positive view for this question.

2)How successful was the video in satisfying the conventions of the genre?
There was a lot of positive feedback from this question, as you can see from the table below. We had to make sure that every part of our video matched the conventions of the pop genre, our digipak follows the conventions and to make our video follow we looked at different artists that are involved in the pop industry, we particularly looked at rihannas other pop videos in order to develop a sense of her pop 'style'. We got comments such as 'very typical pop video' 'very successful in showing the genre''the pop genre would be lucky to have this video'. In terms of the editing we had different views one viewer stated 'lip syncing was great' however another person said that the timing of the lip syncing could be improved, however after going through the video on a high speed computer it matched will and was synced in time with the song. We believe that the reason behind the poor lip syncing during the showcase was the slow speed cables and the connection. Our video kept buffering and took some time to load. Viewers particularly enjoyed the spotlight shot and stated that these really satisfied the conventions of a pop video.

3)|Editing - how successful is the editing?
again this question linked with the above so the feedback that we recieved was very similar, stating 'good shots / sound linked with lip syncing' and 'very good'.

4)Cinematography - How successful were the choice of camera angles and movement?
The camera angles we used were very similar to those used in other pop videos, we took ideas from some and put them all together to create our video. We recieved some positive feedback for this question, 100% of people thought that the camera angles matched the music video however, one responder quoted 'some repetitive shots'. However from our research on previous pop music videos, they incur a lot of recurring shots here is an example
Here you can see that at two different times, one at 1.51 and the other at 2.14, they both use the same shot, I found it a bit of trouble to get the exact shot however this was as close as possible. If Justin Bieber a Known pop artist can use the same shots then I am sure Jayme-Lee can. However maybe we could have varied the shots a bit more.

5) Did the narrative of the music video suit the themes of the song overall?
Some people decided that the narrative of the music video did suit the song, however others thought that some ideas crossed over, other people thought of it as a replica of rihannas previous video, even though the only similar shot was in the skatepark, this was to remain contextual to the music video. Altogether most of the feedback recieved was positive.

6)Was the narrative in the video easy to follow?
By including shots that were the complete opposite we recieved different feedback, 70% of people said that the narrative was only 'sometimes' easy to follow, we recieved feedback that said the beginning of the video was slightly difficult to understand. We tried to put together an up and down relationship as if a story is being told, we began with Jayme-Lee walking through a park after a night out, with her heels in her hand she is lost and lonely, however we then quickly jump to the lovey scenes with her boyfriend which shows a complete contradiction. Perhaps the beginning scenes could be adjusted, as this is the feedback we recieved.
some comments recieved
"Not at first"
"No"
"very much so"
"Yes, nice concept"

7)Were you entertained throughout the video?
Most of the feedback we recieved for this was positive, quite simple answers were given 2 people said 'no' and that they didnt find the video entertaining howvever the majority of people said that they were entertained throughout, I dont think that this is something that needs to be changed.

8) Which section of the video was most successful and why?
Every person that answered this question said that the best part of the video was the shadows and the spotlight shot. which is here :

9)What could we do to improve this?
Mixed reactions on this question, around 40% said that we had nothing to improve and quoted it as 'great' however other people thought that we needed to do the following things in order to improve:
-Develop the narrative
-Get more experience
-Improve lip syncing
-more repetition
-less repetition

Here are some of the answers to the questions asked at our showcase.

Finalising Font ideas

Here are a few of the ideas that we thought about for the fonts throughout our digipak, it is important to get the right font and we aimed towards one that resembled handwriting. A rough handwriting that could look like a signed cd rather than a title. This would add some personal touches and believe that it would be better compared to a simple font.

FRONT COVER OF DIGIPAK

As a group we decided on this particular picture for the front cover after looking at many other pop artists. Within the pop genre the album covers are simply close ups with a colour scheme, for example
and
You can see that the main picture on the front cover is simply a close up of their face along with a colour scheme. This is the reason behind our choice of picture which is a close up of Jayme-Lees face along with a colour scheme of Red and Black to represent a Fiery Love, sometimes Fiery yet sometimes resembling death. Both colours stand out and we chose these not only for the themes of the album but to also attract people into recognizing and potentially buying my album.

EDITING

Just nearly completed editing, added some really good shots but from feedback it seems that the end of the music video seems to be slighlty better than the beginning, going to take a few more shots tonight at my gym so hopefully it'll all be ready for tomorrow :)

editing

After looking at the video i realized we were missing something, so decided to go to my dad's, use their apple mac and start all over again, posted to our youtube blog I attempted to change it around a little. The only problem I now have with this video is its not 100% finished, and one of the opening scenes is portrait style rather than landscape. Found it quite hard having to manage all our shots within landscape as it is difficult to edit without this and it wouldn't have been as good.

Filming tomorrow aswell so we'll speak then :)

iCloud

iCloud is a recent software that is designed for apple users, it allows people to share their own folders and sync this with their other gadgets such as ipad iphone imac etc. This change in technology has now increased so much that you dont need a wire, you dont even need an internet connection or bluetooth. You can be many miles away and still share folders and data, this is going to change technology and soon i can predict that we will be able to access virtual computers without them even being here, it makes it alot easier for consumers who have now been given an easy lifestyle. Is this making audiences more passive or more active?
On one hand consumers are purchasing more technology, yet on the other they are not having to do the things that they once used too, such as access a computer, purchase wireless. In my opinion consumers are becoming less passive because of the revolution of technology
Monday 12th March: Today we filmed in order to gather together a few shots in which we could edit, we decided to begin with the opening shots and went to a location situated near to the school. Here we filmed me waking up on the bench and walking over the bridge, we then wanted to deviate from the story board by adding another shot in which we could use effects. We decided to use a blink shot in order to show the distance jumping e.g. first im in front of the camera, then a bit further on, and then even further. We will edit this in order to ensure it is a creative shot.

Wednesday 17th March: Today we travelled throughout cheshunt in order to find a place where we could film the 'happy' times between the lovers, we were looking for an area of dusty ground to get a wheel spin shot with the car. We accidentally found ourselves on private property so couldnt continue with the shots, this is when we drove to cheshunt park and shot there. Here we managed to film Mine and Luke's happy times, including shots where we lay down together, shots where we are jumping over fences and running as if we dont have a care in the world. Charlotte decided to leave her handbrake off and her car went rolling down the car park, quite an eventful filming session, and Marianna and I will continue later on in order to film the more personal shots at my house.

Wednesday 21st march: Tried to film the bath scene but the camera kept running out of battery, we managed to get some really good pictures for the digipak and again tried to search for areas where we could get a dusty wheel spin, however still couldnt find any.

Monday 26th March: Today we edited and decided to change to imovie compared to final cut pro, this is because we used it last year and found it alot easier and a lot less time consuming, however we tried to do a split screen and could only manage to get picture on picture which is not what we was after, charlotte will be editing tomorrow and i will research how to do manage to do this.

Digipak

Being asked to create a digipak for our music video so here are a few examples and analysis to them. It is important to analyse a few digipaks in order to get an idea about what the general layout etc is for our genre. If wewere to look at other genres then it would not suit our song choice. Here are the examples.

Here is Rihannas digipak from her 'Loud' Album, as you can see it is a close up of her face with her eyes turnt away from the camera, I have looked at a few examples and they all seem to be of the artist themselves, this seems to be consistent throughout digipaks of our chosen genre. The red lipstick matches the red hair which attracts the audiences attention, the picture of rihanna is larger than the actual name of the album, so perhaps the artist is aiming to depend on her image rather than the album title.

This is Lady Gaga's album cover for 'The Fame' the album picture is overpowered by her face and sunglasses, the name of the album is only small and painted on her sunglasses. It seems that most pop digipaks have actual close ups of the artists, and the name of the album never seems to be as prominent. Our group will take this into consideration when thinking of our digipak.
